Basketball
Does the YMCA have a basketball court?
Most YMCA branches in Central Massachusetts, including the Central Community Branch in Worcester and the Greendale Family Branch, have full-size gymnasiums with basketball courts. These courts are accessible during designated open gym times, which are scheduled throughout the week. Open gym sessions are typically available on a first-come, first-served basis. View our page for current open gym schedules.
YMCA Youth Basketball Programs
We offer seasonal basketball leagues and clinics for boys and girls in grades Pre-K through middle school. Each program includes structured practices, gameplay, and skill development tailored to your child’s age and ability level. Programs include:
- Introductory basketball for young players
- Developmental leagues for beginner to intermediate players
- Competitive leagues for experienced players
- Seasonal day camps and holiday basketball clinics

Great Coaches Make All the Difference
Let’s be honest, what makes a sport really stick with someone usually isn’t just the rules or the drills. It’s the people. The mentors. The coaches who remember your name, cheer you on and teach you how to shake off a tough game and try again. At the YMCA, our coaches do more than help you shoot a basket or serve a ball—they help build confidence, resilience, and team spirit. Many of our coaches are parents, teachers, former athletes, and passionate community members who truly care. They focus on:
- Positive coaching techniques that build confidence
- Age-appropriate skill development, from basic movement to team strategies
- Inclusion and sportsmanship, ensuring every player feels welcome
- Goal-setting and resilience, helping youth and adults overcome challenges
YMCA Basketball for Adults
Many Y branches offer adult basketball leagues, pickup games, and open gym times for casual or competitive play. Here’s what you might find:
- Open Gym: Drop in and shoot around, or join a pickup game during designated hours
- Leagues: Join a team or create your own—adult rec leagues are perfect for staying active and social
- Skills & Conditioning: Some branches offer clinics or adult-friendly training for those who want to improve their game
- Coed & Age-Based Play: Many Y locations offer coed games and age-specific leagues (like 30+, 40+, etc.)
