Boroughs Y to expand

Westborough – Following a particularly successful summer camp season, the Boroughs Family Branch YMCA in Westborough is set for an approximately $4 million construction project including a two-story addition and a new outdoor aquatics center. The facility’s six-lane indoor swimming pool has been popular since the Boroughs Y opened in November 2002, noted Betsy Moquin, the director of marketing and advancement.

“The pool is really one of the hubs here at the Y that gets the most use,” she said. “Depending upon the season, we have anywhere from 1,100 to 1,300 kids a week in youth swim lessons. That doesn’t count adult lessons, water aerobics classes, lap swims and family swims. For a long time, staff observations and members’ comments have been that we need another pool.”

Our Story

IMG_030-edit-1Learn About Our Story and Commitment to Massachusetts Communities

The YMCA of Central Massachusetts, a nonprofit human service organization, is committed to strengthening the foundations of community through Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility with children, teens, adults, and seniors in Central Massachusetts.

Our history runs deep and has impacted generations dating back to the 1800s. The beautiful downtown Mechanics Hall was the original landmark of the first YMCA in Worcester. In 1864, the Y used rented space on the second floor of Mechanics Hall for Bible classes, religious meetings, visiting the sick and aiding the poor.

Today, the Y is one of the region’s most significant charitable institutions. The Y has demonstrated, with great consistency, a distinct ability to address ever-changing community needs. We do not exist merely to provide quality facilities for health and wellness activities. Our four full-service branches serve 29,000 members across 57 cities and towns. We also deliver programs at more than 15 sites in other locations along with our two rural summer day camps. Collaboration with more than 100 other partners extends our impact to nearly 60,000 individuals annually.

This isn't your grandfather's YMCA

By Jon Bishop

LEOMINSTER — Jennifer Gordon says the YMCA’s days of being “just a gym and swim” are long over.

Gordon, Regional Associate Executive Director of the YMCA of Central Massachusetts, points to the new Leominster Community Branch in City Place — which opened Thursday (Sept 24) — as evidence of the Y’s current mission.

It’s a place planning on keeping a full schedule from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.
