It’s the Holiday Season and there have been a lot of activities going on throughout our Association!

The Montachusett Community Branch YMCA held their Annual Breakfast with Santa on December 7th as well as a Holiday Zumba Party. Members and staff, young and old, were able to enjoy each others company and get involved with their community.

The Greendale Family Branch YMCA held their Annual Supper with Santa (this guy seems to be everywhere!) on December 13th in their community room. Crafts, vendors and 2 seating options for dinner allowed everyone some quality time with each other as well as the man in red.

Members, families and friends were at the Central Community Branch YMCA on the night of December 13th to watch, “The Polar Express”. Everyone enjoyed some pizza, had some quality time with friends, and even had a chance to take some great photos for the Holidays with a Polar Express backdrop!

On Saturday, December 14, the Boroughs Family Branch YMCA held their Annual Event, Holidays Around the World, a morning to learn about and celebrate the wonderful holiday traditions of their staff and friends. There were festive snacks, activities, and a chance to explore a variety of cultures.

The Tri-Community Family Branch YMCA will be holding an Active Older Adult luncheon on December 18th starting at 11:30 am. Lasagna and dessert will be served. FREE for Y Members and $2 for Non-Members. Please RSVP at their Front Desk. 12 Days of Fit-mas are also in full force! Make sure to find out what all of their Holiday inspired Challenges are!

Holiday time means it’s the Season of Giving! Your local YMCA Branch has lots of opportunities to give! Donate online, volunteer, or ask about other ways you can help! A great way to help out is to participate in our giving trees at our YMCA branches. Each branch operates slightly differently from the others, so make sure to ask our Welcome Center Staff about details.

Then & Now: Old Greendale YMCA, Stores Street, Worcester

The Greendale Family Branch YMCA was established in 1929, but without its own building. The branch conducted programs at Norton Co.’s fieldhouse and at area churches.

Plans to erect a new building for the Greendale YMCA began in the 1940s, and by 1950 the building pictured in our Then story opened on Stores Street on land donated by Norton Co., the abrasives manufacturer now known as Saint-Gobain. Norton Co. also provided a maintenance fund of $25,000 a year for five years.

The branch expanded over the next several years and was home to many for exercise. In 1970, discussions began about constructing Route 52, now called Interstate 190, and tearing down the Greendale YMCA to make way for it. The old building was located at least in part where I-190 stands, just before Exit 1, abutting Indian Lake. (continued)
